The fifth image is the ocean and the waters: as all rivers meet in one sea, so every kind of experience has its own "sea", a single meeting-place (ekāyana). All touches flow into the skin, tastes into the tongue, forms into the eye, intentions into the mind, knowledges into the heart, works into the hands, roads into the feet, the Vedas into speech. Thirteen oceans of the human being!
The lesson of this inventory is twofold. First: the endless multiplicity of experience is already gathered by nature into a handful of estuaries — the world is not chaos, it flows in somewhere. Second, and central to this conversation: if every multiplicity has its meeting-place, then there is also a meeting-place of all meeting-places — the ātman, the sea of these seas. Yājñavalkya leads Maitreyī from the rivers to the sea, and from the seas to the Ocean, of which he is about to say his hardest word.
