The last joints of the vine lead away beyond the horizon of human names: after Kumārahārita the list (in the full recitation) goes up through the ancients to Prajāpati and to Brahman himself. The conclusion is the same as in the Chāndogya (8.15.1): the source of the succession is not a man; the first Teacher is the Creator, and the vine is rooted in heaven.
So ends the second adhyāya, which has held Gārgya and his silence, the sleeping man, the instruction to Maitreyī about what is dear, the "neti neti" and the fourteen waves of honey. All of it is not composition but inheritance: evaṁ paramparā-prāptam (BG 4.2). The list of names is a receipt for delivery; the next adhyāya will open the great tournament at Janaka's court, where this inheritance will be defended by Yājñavalkya himself.
