After Yājñavalkya's departure comes a vaṁśa again, the vine of succession, as after the madhu-kāṇḍa (2.6): the Upaniṣad will not let the reader go without the list of hands from which what he has heard was received. The one who went into the forest did not carry the knowledge off — it stayed in the chain.
The first joints coincide with the earlier list: the school is one, the trunk common. To read these names is to bow to every link: any one of them might have failed, and we should have heard neither "not so, not so" nor "such is immortality".
