The great teaching about what is dear, in a second and enlarged recension: to the list of 2.4.5 are added cattle, the Vedas and beings: the inventory is now complete down to the last creature and the last holy thing — everything dear is dear "for the sake of the ātman" that shows through it.
And then the fourfold programme that became the statute of Vedānta: ātmā vā are draṣṭavyaḥ śrotavyo mantavyo nididhyāsitavyaḥ — the ātman is "to be seen, to be heard, to be thought upon, to be deeply contemplated": darśana as the goal, śravaṇa-manana-nididhyāsana as the way. The whole discipline of the schools is in one line, spoken to a wife at parting.
And the promise that justifies it all: "when the ātman is seen… all this is known": that knowledge "by which everything is known" (cf. 2.4.5; ChU 6.1) — for everything dear and everything that is, is held by Him as rays are held by the sun. Love was right in its attachments — it only did not know the address.
