The conclusion to the lower ladder, and in it the same proviso as in 5.2 and 5.9.
Seven steps is a coarse count. In each are a hundred kinds, and each is many-formed.
Note the word vibhava — “display, power, wealth”. Ignorance is called rich: it has a hundred guises on every step.
This agrees with the observation of everyone who has watched himself. One can err in an endless number of ways; truth is one, and therefore seems poor.
The address dvija — “twice-born” — is said to Nidāgha as a brāhmaṇa. The teacher reminds him of his station at the very end of the heavy catalogue: you are not of those who sleep.
