“The knower's mind goes to destruction; the mind of the ignorant is a chain. Neither bliss nor blisslessness, neither moving, nor unmoving, nor fixed, neither existent nor non-existent, nor yet the middle between them — such, they know, is the knower's mind.”

The verse answers the question that arises after all the talk of the mind's death: what remains to the knower instead of a mind?
The answer is given in negations, and the last of them is the most curious: na ca eteṣāṃ madhyam — “nor the middle between them”.
Usually Vedānta, having rejected the extremes, points to the middle (2.69, 5.69). Here even that is rejected.
Note the first pair: na ānandaṃ na nirānandam — “neither bliss nor blisslessness”.
This is sober. Of the liberated man's mind one cannot even say that it is blissful — for bliss is a state, and there are no states there.
And the first line: in the knower the mind goes to destruction; in the ignorant it is a chain.
That is, one and the same thing crumbles in the one and holds the other. The difference is not in the mind but in its bearer.
