त्यागादानपरित्यागी विज्वरो भव सर्वदा यस्येदं जन्म पाश्चात्यं तमाश्वेव महामते

The first line repeats the rule of 5.172: neither grasp nor let go.
Here it is said still more briefly: tyāga-ādāna-parityāgī — “one who has left both the leaving and the taking”.
Note that renunciation is put first. It is the more dangerous: taking we notice in ourselves, while refusal we count a virtue and therefore never check.
The second half begins a thought to be completed in the next verse, and in it stands the word pāścātya — “last, hindmost”.
Janma pāścātyam — “the last birth”.
This is the first place in the book where it speaks of what befalls a man in his final life. The answer will come in the next verse, and it is a beautiful one.
