“As travellers look at a village met unexpectedly on the road, so do the knowing look upon the splendour of enjoyments.”

A second image in a row on the same theme, and gentler than the last.
The traveller goes his way. On the road a village turns up: people, trade, noise, another's life. He looks with interest and walks on.
He neither scorns the village nor stays in it.
Note the word aśaṅkitā — “unlooked-for, unsuspected”. The village was neither sought nor avoided; it happened.
Bhoga-śrī — “the splendour of enjoyments”, and the word śrī, as in 3.8, means magnificence. The book concedes that delights are beautiful; it does not pretend otherwise.
The whole question is whether you are going anywhere. He who has a road passes through the village; he who has none stays there to live.
