The first half repeats 4.106: there is no other crossing.
The second begins an image to be completed in the next verse, and it is martial.
Mahā-naraka-sāmrājya — “the empire of the great hell”. The word sāmrājya occurred already in 4.97, where it named the empire of designlessness. Here — the opposite realm.
Matta-duṣkṛta-vāraṇāḥ — “the frenzied elephants of misdeeds”. The elephant in battle-madness is the image of unrestrainable destructive force; matta means “intoxicated, in rut”.
Note that the misdeeds are depicted not as lapses but as a force: elephants are not shamed, they are fought.
The next verse will name the second arm of the host.
