When men complete a ṛc, they sound "Oṁ" above it; so with the sāman, so with the yajus. That sound is this very syllable: the immortal, the fearless. Having entered it, the gods became immortal.

The explanation of a liturgical detail: yadā vā ṛcam āpnoti om ity evātisvarati — "on completing a ṛc, they sound 'Oṁ' over it": every verse of the three Vedas is crowned by the syllable — and here is why: eṣa u svaro yad etad akṣaram — "that tone is this very syllable": etad amṛtam abhayam — "the immortal, the fearless": the gods, on entering it, tat praviśya devā amṛtā abhavan — "became immortal".
Every "Oṁ" at the end of a verse is the trace of that great escape: the gods who rose out of the texts into sound left the door open: a singer who sings a verse through to the syllable travels that same road every time — out of the mortal (the composed) into the immortal (the simple). Amṛtam abhayam is a pair familiar from the Kaṭha and the Praśna: immortality and fearlessness are one possession; and it lives not in the thickness of volumes but in the sound above them — accessible to anyone who has breath and a "yes" (khaṇḍa 1: the syllable of assent!).
