Then he asked Jana Śārkarākṣya: "Śārkarākṣya, whom do you venerate as the ātman?" — "Space, reverend king," he said. — "Abundant is that Vaiśvānara-ātman whom you venerate. Hence you are abundant in offspring and in wealth.

The fourth answer is ākāśa, space. The name of the veneration is bahula, "the Abundant": the expanse contains everything without crowding anything, and the venerator of the expanse is "abundant in offspring and wealth" — his house grows broad, like the breadth he venerates.
Ākāśa is the subtlest and the most "divine" of the elements: not for nothing did the fires tell Upakosala kham brahma — "space is Brahman" (4.10.4). Yet even this noblest of images will take its place with Aśvapati only as the saṁdeha, the trunk of the Vaiśvānara. Even the almost-infinite is not yet the Infinite; even the container of everything is not yet the Container. Here it is easiest of all to be mistaken, because here the likeness is greatest.
