सर्वे स्वराः इन्द्रस्य आत्मानः सर्वे ऊष्माणः प्रजापतेः आत्मानः सर्वे स्पर्शाः मृत्योः आत्मानः तम् यदि स्वरेषु उपालभेत इन्द्रम् शरणम् प्रपन्नः अभूवम् सः त्वा प्रति वक्ष्यति इति एनम् ब्रूयात्

Traducción
All vowels are the bodies of Indra, all sibilants the bodies of Prajāpati, all stops the bodies of Death. If a man reproves him for the vowels, let him say: "I have taken refuge with Indra — he will answer you."

A theology of phonetics: sarve svarā indrasyātmānaḥ — "all vowels are the bodies of Indra" (sonority, strength!); ūṣmāṇaḥ — the sibilants and aspirates — the bodies of Prajāpati (the breath of the Lord of creatures!); sparśāḥ — the stops — the bodies of Death (a stop is an arrest of sound: every consonant is a small death of sounding!). The alphabet is apportioned among the deities: in every syllable uttered there are bodies of three kinds: strength, breath, limit.
And a protective formula: to one who reproves him for a vowel let him answer: indraṁ śaraṇaṁ prapanno 'bhūvam — "I have taken refuge with Indra — he will answer you": a singer who honours the letters as the bodies of gods is shielded, when he slips, by his Refuge: the critic will have to deal with the Owner of the sound! The phrase śaraṇaṁ prapanna — "having gone to a refuge" — is precious: it is the vocabulary of śaraṇāgati, of self-surrender: even in phonetics the Upaniṣad teaches the soul's chief gesture — the handing of oneself over.
