आकाशो वाव तेजसो भूयान् आकाशे वै सूर्याचन्द्रमसौ उभौ विद्युत् नक्षत्राणि अग्निः आकाशेन आह्वायति आकाशेन शृणोति आकाशेन प्रतिसृणोति आकाशे रमते आकाशे न रमते आकाशे जायते आकाशम् अभिजायते आकाशम् उपास्स्व इति
ākāśo vāva tejaso bhūyān ākāśe vai sūryācandramasau ubhau vidyut nakṣatrāṇi agniḥ ākāśena āhvāyati ākāśena śṛṇoti ākāśena pratisṛṇoti ākāśe ramate ākāśe na ramate ākāśe jāyate ākāśam abhijāyate ākāśam upāssva iti
"Space is greater than heat. In space are both luminaries, the sun and the moon, the lightning, the stars and fire. Through space a man calls, through space he hears, through space he answers; in space he rejoices and in space he does not rejoice; in space he is born and into space he grows. Venerate space."

The twelfth rung: ākāśa, space, the container of the luminaries themselves: sun, moon, lightning, stars, fire all burn in it. And not the luminaries only: human connection itself is spatial — "through space you call, hear, answer"; in it are joy and joylessness, birth and growth. Everything we call life is played out upon this invisible stage.
Ākāśa is the subtlest of the elements, the medium of sound and so of the Word: not for nothing did the fires teach Upakosala kham brahma — "space is Brahman" (4.10.4). Above the elements there will be nothing more — from here the ladder will step inside a man, to memory. So the Upaniṣad draws a line: even the all-embracing expanse of the world is less than one who is able to remember it.
