Then he asked Uddālaka Āruṇi: "Gautama, whom do you venerate as the ātman?" — "The earth, reverend king," he said. — "The support is that Vaiśvānara-ātman whom you venerate. Hence you are established in offspring and in cattle.

The last to answer is Uddālaka, the most eminent of the six, the one who brought the others. His answer is the earth, and its name is pratiṣṭhā, "the Support": the famous teacher's veneration is solid and earthy, and its fruit is stable — "established in offspring and cattle". (In offspring: this is about Śvetaketu; we have seen the stability of the Āruṇi line at work.)
There is a quiet irony in the great Uddālaka's venerating the lowest tier — the feet. But there is depth as well: he who venerates the feet is nearest of all to the right gesture. In the language of bhakti the Lord's feet are the highest object of veneration, the refuge of all seekers; Uddālaka's error lies not in choosing the feet but in not knowing that they are feet. One who learns this is no longer an idolater of a limb but a servant at the feet — and from that recognition he is separated by one verse of Aśvapati's.
