आदित्यः ब्रह्म इति आदेशः तस्य उपव्याख्यानम् असत् एव इदम् अग्र आसीत् तत् सत् आसीत् तत् समभवत् तत् आण्डम् निरवर्तत तत् संवत्सरस्य मात्राम् अशयत तत् निरभिद्यत ते आण्डकपाले रजतम् च सुवर्णम् च अभवताम्
ādityaḥ brahma iti ādeśaḥ tasya upavyākhyānam asat eva idam agra āsīt tat sat āsīt tat samabhavat tat āṇḍam niravartata tat saṃvatsarasya mātrām aśayata tat nirabhidyata te āṇḍakapāle rajatam ca suvarṇam ca abhavatām
"The sun is Brahman" — such is the teaching. Here is the exposition of it. In the beginning this was non-existent; it became existent, it grew, it turned into an egg, it lay for the space of a year — and it split open: the two halves of the shell became one of silver and one of gold.

The adhyāya's closing khaṇḍa: ādityo brahmety ādeśaḥ — "the sun is Brahman: such is the teaching" — and a cosmogony of the egg: asad evedam agra āsīt — "in the beginning this was non-existent" (unmanifest!): tat sad āsīt — "it became existent": samabhavat — it grew: āṇḍaṁ niravartata — "it turned into an egg"!: it lay for a year — and nirabhidyata — "it split": two shells — rajataṁ ca suvarṇaṁ ca — of silver and of gold!
The world-egg (brahmāṇḍa — "the egg of Brahman": the Sanskrit word for the universe itself!): being hatches like a chick: a year of brooding (terms are sacred!), then the cracking — and two hemispheres of shell. The first adhyāya brooded upon the Puruṣa "as an egg" (the Aitareya!); here the egg is the universe itself: the birth of the world is not an explosion but a hatching: the cosmos has a shell, a yolk, and — as we shall now see — a Nestling.
