यः आत्मा अपहतपाप्मा विजरः विमृत्युः विशोकः विजिघत्सः अपिपासः सत्यकामः सत्यसंकल्पः सः अन्वेष्टव्यः सः विजिज्ञासितव्यः सः सर्वांश् च लोकान् आप्नोति सर्वांश् च कामान् यः तम् आत्मानम् अनुविद्य विजानाति इति ह प्रजापतिः उवाच
yaḥ ātmā apahatapāpmā vijaraḥ vimṛtyuḥ viśokaḥ vijighatsaḥ apipāsaḥ satyakāmaḥ satyasaṃkalpaḥ saḥ anveṣṭavyaḥ saḥ vijijñāsitavyaḥ saḥ sarvāṃś ca lokān āpnoti sarvāṃś ca kāmān yaḥ tam ātmānam anuvidya vijānāti iti ha prajāpatiḥ uvāca
"The ātman, free from evil, ageless, deathless, sorrowless, hungerless, thirstless, whose desires are true, whose resolves are true — he should be sought, he should be striven after in knowledge. He obtains all the worlds and all desires who, having found this ātman, knows him" — so said Prajāpati.

The Chāndogya's crowning story begins, and it opens with a proclamation: Prajāpati, the father of creatures, announces the eightfold formula of the ātman (the same as in 8.1.5), with the double command "to be sought and to be known" and with the reward — "all the worlds and all desires". This is no private instruction but a manifesto to the whole universe: an invitation sent out to all the worlds.
The verse repeats the chapter's opening word for word, and this construction has a sense: first the truth was set out (8.1–8.6); now it will be shown how hard it is to take. One and the same formula will be heard by a god and by a demon, and heard differently; a hundred and one years will be spent by the best of the gods in hearing it out to the end. The Upaniṣad gives warning: between a right word and a right understanding lies a whole life of discipleship.
