तम् ह उवाच यथा सोम्य महतः अभ्याहितस्य एकः अङ्गारः खद्योतमात्रः परिशिष्टः स्यात् तेन ततः अपि न बहु दहेत् एवम् सोम्य ते षोडशानाम् कलानाम् एका कला अतिशिष्टा स्यात् तया एतर्हि वेदान् न अनुभवसि अशान अथ मे विज्ञास्यसि इति
tam ha uvāca yathā somya mahataḥ abhyāhitasya ekaḥ aṅgāraḥ khadyotamātraḥ pariśiṣṭaḥ syāt tena tataḥ api na bahu dahet evam somya te ṣoḍaśānām kalānām ekā kalā atiśiṣṭā syāt tayā etarhi vedān na anubhavasi aśāna atha me vijñāsyasi iti
His father said to him: "As of a great fire that has been heaped up one ember the size of a firefly may be left, and with it one could no longer burn much — so, my dear, of your sixteen parts one part is left: with it you do not grasp the Vedas. Eat — and you will understand me."

The diagnosis is given in an image of rare beauty: of the bonfire of the mind one ember is left, "the size of a firefly" (khadyota-mātra). Life — one part out of sixteen — still smoulders (water preserved the breath), but it has nothing to burn with: thinking is heat, and heat is food. The father neither gloats nor moralises: "eat, and you will understand me". Understanding itself is postponed until dinner — with the smile of a pedagogue for whom even hunger serves as an instructor.
The gentleness of the ending is precious: the experiment might have become a humiliation, and instead becomes a communion — the son learns the limits of his own composition without a single reproach. So truth teaches when love is teaching it: not "you are nothing" but "see what you are made of — and now eat, and I will tell you who you are".
