"Then let your honour hold all the priestly offices with me!" — "So be it. But let these men sing, who have already been admitted; and as much wealth as you give them, give also to me." — "So be it," said the sacrificer.

A settlement between men of worth: the king gives Uṣasti all the offices: bhagavāṁs tv eva me sarvair ārtvijyaiḥ — "let your honour be with me in all the offices"; and the master's answer is magnanimous: atha tarhy eta eva samatisṛṣṭāḥ stuvatām — "then let these very men sing, who have been admitted": he does not turn out the silenced singers but leaves them their service under his direction (they will sing — he will know); yāvat tv ebhyo dhanaṁ dadyās tāvan mama dadyāḥ — "but as much as you give them, give me as much": justice without humiliating anyone.
All receive their own: the singers their office and their fee, the king a knower at the head of his sacrifice, Uṣasti recognition and a competence (that very dhana-mātrā of his morning sigh!). A victor who has not trampled the vanquished is the rarest of endings to a contest: Uṣasti's knowledge is crowned by magnanimity — and thereby attested as real. One thing remains to complete: the singers who sat down in silence must learn the deities of their portions — and, to their credit, they will presently come and ask.
