अथ यानि चतुश्चत्वारिंशत् वर्षाणि तत् माध्यंदिनम् सवनम् चतुश्चत्वारिंशदक्षरा त्रिष्टुप् त्रैष्टुभम् माध्यंदिनम् सवनम् तत् अस्य रुद्राः अन्वायत्ताः प्राणाः वाव रुद्राः एते हि इदम् सर्वम् रोदयन्ति

And the [next] forty-four years are the midday pressing: the triṣṭubh has forty-four syllables, and the midday pressing is triṣṭubh-wise. With it the Rudras are bound up; the prāṇas are indeed the Rudras: for they make all this weep.

The second pressing is maturity: the years from the twenty-fourth to the sixty-eighth (44 = the syllables of the triṣṭubh, the midday metre of strength!): the noon of life belongs to the Rudras, and the etymology is severe: prāṇā vāva rudrāḥ ete hīdaṁ sarvaṁ rodayanti — "the prāṇas are the Rudras: for they make all this weep (rud-!)".
Maturity is the rudric age: a season of storms, labours, losses and responsibility: the same prāṇas that in youth "made dwell" now "draw out tears": the strength of the mature years is that of a purifying thunderstorm. The Upaniṣad does not flatter the middle of life — it gives it a liturgical office: noon is hard, like the triṣṭubh, but it is a savana, an oblation in due form, and not a meaningless drudgery: the tears of maturity too are soma.
