For I have heard from those like your reverence: only knowledge learned from a teacher leads most surely to the goal." And he told him that very same thing — and nothing at all was lost from it, nothing was lost.

This is what the whole story has been told for: ācāryād dhaiva vidyā viditā sādhiṣṭhaṁ prāpat — "knowledge received from an ācārya attains the best". The bull, the fire, the swan and the diver told the truth — but it reaches its full power only when received from the mouth of a living teacher, in succession. The Gītā prescribes the same: truth is learned by "prostrating, questioning and serving" those who know (BG 4.34); evaṁ paramparā-prāptam — "thus, by a chain of succession, was this knowledge received" (BG 4.2).
Gautama "told him that very same thing" — nothing else, nothing greater in the letter. The wondrous teachers had not erred by a word. But the verse's conclusion reveals the difference: atra ha na kiṁcana vīyāya — "here nothing at all was lost" (from vi + √i, "to go away, be lost"). Knowledge passed on through an ācārya arrives without loss, whole and living — like water handed from hand to hand instead of poured down from a height. The same word becomes a refrain: the repeated "nothing was lost" is the seal of a lesson completed.
So the Upaniṣad, without belittling marvels, puts them in their place: nature may prompt, but what saves is knowledge flowing along the chain from the Lord through his envoys, the ācāryas. The story of Satyakāma is a hymn to that chain and to the honesty which alone makes a man fit to receive it.
