Here the reception of the guest is an image of the honor due to the wise: the king himself rises, bows, seats him, and reveres him. It is significant that Narada begins not with praise but with a question about the threefold aim of life — dharma, artha, and kama: true friendship tests whether a friend lives righteously. Thus the scripture shows the duty of hospitality and introduces the great teaching; and the questioning now begins.
