Here the king's virtue is vigilance and timeliness. It is significant that both untimely sleep and slowness in action are condemned, as is counsel taken at extremes — alone or in a crowd: wisdom holds to the middle course and to speed in what is good. Thus the scripture reveals watchfulness and promptness as a ruler's duty; and next comes the conduct of affairs.
