ब्राह्मणानाम् च साधूनाम् तव निःश्रेयसे शुभाbrāhmaṇānām ca sādhūnām tava niḥśreyase śubhāand [honor] to brahmins and to the righteous—a good honor, for your highest good;
कच्चित् धर्मे त्रयी-मूले पूर्वैः आचरिते जनैःkaccit dharme trayī-mūle pūrvaiḥ ācarite janaiḥI hope that in dharma, rooted in the three [Vedas], as former people practiced it,
वर्तमानः तथा कर्तुम् तस्मिन् कर्मणि वर्तसेvartamānaḥ tathā kartum tasmin karmaṇi vartaseabiding in it, you strive to act likewise in that matter;
कच्चित् तव गृहे अन्नानि स्वादूनि अश्नन्ति वै द्विजाःkaccit tava gṛhe annāni svādūni aśnanti vai dvijāḥI hope that in your house brahmins partake of tasty foods,
गुणवन्ति गुण-उपेताः तव अध्यक्षम् स-दक्षिणम्guṇavanti guṇa-upetāḥ tava adhyakṣam sa-dakṣiṇamendowed with virtues, virtuous [themselves], under your supervision and with the giving of [dakshina]?

Here the king's good is bound up with the honoring of knowledge, of brahmins, and of the Vedas. It is significant that dharma is called "rooted in the three Vedas" and in the custom of the ancestors: righteousness is not invented anew but inherited and preserved. Thus the scripture shows the continuity of the sacred as the foundation of duty; what follows concerns sacrifices and worship.
