Then he churned out fire: from his mouth as from a womb, and from his palms. Therefore both mouth and palms are hairless inside, as a womb is hairless inside. When people say, "Sacrifice to this god, sacrifice to that," each god is his own outpouring: he himself is all the gods. Everything moist he created from seed — and that is soma. All this world is only food and the eater of food: soma is the food, fire the eater. This is Brahman's higher creation: that he created the gods, who are better than himself — being mortal, he created immortals. Therefore it is the higher creation. He who knows thus comes to be in this higher creation of his.

Creation is completed with fire and soma — eater and food: agni and soma, the two halves of every sacrifice and of every metabolism; "all this world is only food and the eater". The formula sounds like an echo of the first, grim cosmogony of hunger — but now there is a Face within it: the gods, the fire, the soma are "his own outpourings"; eṣa u hy eva sarve devāḥ — "he himself is all the gods". The polytheism of the rite is set aside in one sentence: every altar, to whomever the oblation is poured, feeds the One.
And the boldest thing is called "the higher creation" (atisṛṣṭi): "being mortal, he created immortals" — from within the body of death of the first cosmogony he poured forth gods better than himself. To create above oneself is the signature of a real Creator, and, by the way, the measure of all fatherhood and teaching: to beget what surpasses you is not a humiliation but the highest of victories. He who knows this "comes to be in the higher creation" — he lives in a world where surpassing is possible, where the begotten is not condemned to be worse than the begetter.
