याज्ञवल्क्येति ह उवाच कतिभिः अयम् अद्य ब्रह्मा यज्ञम् दक्षिणतः देवताभिः गोपायति इति एकया इति कतमा सा एका इति मनः एव इति अनन्तम् वै मनः अनन्ताः विश्वे देवाः अनन्तम् एव सः तेन लोकम् जयति

"Yājñavalkya," he said, "with how many deities does the brahman priest guard the sacrifice today on the right?" — "With one." — "Which one?" — "With the mind. The mind is infinite, the All-gods are infinite; by this he wins an infinite world."

A question about the fourth priest: the brahman sits to the right of the altar and "guards" the sacrifice — in silence. With what? With one deity: the mind. And a pearl of a formula follows: anantaṁ vai manaḥ — "the mind is infinite, the All-gods are infinite; by this the infinite is won".
Three priests work by counting: three ṛcs, three oblations; the guardian of the sacrifice works by the uncountable — the mind, which has no edge. The silent deity is one, but it is larger than all the enumerable ones: collected attention guards a rite more surely than any recitations (we heard this in the parable of the chariot, ChU 4.16). And the reward matches the organ: by the infinite the infinite is taken.
