"With what deity are you in the northern quarter?" — "With Soma." — "On what is Soma established?" — "On consecration." — "And consecration on what?" — "On truth. That is why they say to the consecrated: 'speak the truth': on truth consecration is established." — "And truth on what?" — "On the heart," he said; "with the heart one knows truth; on the heart truth is established." — "Just so, Yājñavalkya!"

The north is Soma, lord of the sacrificial draught and of vows; his chain runs: consecration (dīkṣā), and dīkṣā on truth — which is why the first word to a consecrated man is satyaṁ vada, "speak the truth". A vow without truthfulness is an empty hoop; the whole power of a consecration comes from fidelity to one's word.
And truth rests on the heart: hṛdayena hi satyaṁ jānāti — "with the heart one knows truth". In the last resort it is not by logic that the true is recognised but by the heart; hence a liar may convince a mind and never a pure heart. Four quarters are gathered: forms, faith, seed, truth — all on one foundation; the zenith remains.
