सः ह उवाच यद् ऊर्ध्वं गार्गि दिवः यद् अवाक् पृथिव्याः यद् अन्तरा द्यावापृथिवी इमे यद् भूतम् च भवत् च भविष्यत् च इति आचक्षते आकाशः एव तद् ओतं च प्रोतं च इति कस्मिन् नु खलु आकाशः ओतः च प्रोतः च इति
saḥ ha uvāca yad ūrdhvaṃ gārgi divaḥ yad avāk pṛthivyāḥ yad antarā dyāvāpṛthivī ime yad bhūtam ca bhavat ca bhaviṣyat ca iti ācakṣate ākāśaḥ eva tad otaṃ ca protaṃ ca iti kasmin nu khalu ākāśaḥ otaḥ ca protaḥ ca iti
He said: "That which is above the sky, Gārgī, that which is below the earth, that which is between sky and earth, that which they call the past, the present and the future — that is woven, warp and woof, precisely upon space." — "And upon what, then, is space woven, warp and woof?"

Yājñavalkya repeats his answer — "upon space" — and by this hands over the move: he sees that Gārgī is leading, and lets her lead it home. And she utters the question of questions: kasmin nu khalv ākāśa otaś ca protaś ca — "and upon what is space itself woven?"
The whole universe with its time has been hung on the subtlest of fabrics — and now the nail on which the fabric hangs is asked for. There is nowhere further to go: the next answer will either name That which is no longer "a thing among things", or collapse into a bad infinity. The moment has come for whose sake Gārgī came back.
