कस्मिन् नु त्वं च आत्मा च प्रतिष्ठितौ स्थः इति प्राणे इति कस्मिन् नु प्राणः प्रतिष्ठितः इति अपाने इति कस्मिन् नु अपानः प्रतिष्ठितः इति व्याने इति कस्मिन् नु व्यानः प्रतिष्ठितः इति उदाने इति कस्मिन् नु उदानः प्रतिष्ठितः इति समाने इति सः एषः नेति नेति आत्मा अगृह्यः न हि गृह्यते अशीर्यः न हि शीर्यते असङ्गः न सज्यते असितः न व्यथते न रिष्यति एतानि अष्टौ आयतनानि अष्टौ लोकाः अष्टौ देवाः अष्टौ पुरुषाः सः यः तान् पुरुषान् निरुह्य प्रत्युह्य अत्यक्रामत् तं त्वा औपनिषदम् पुरुषम् पृच्छामि तं चेत् मे न विवक्ष्यसि मूर्धा ते विपतिष्यति इति तं ह न मेने शाकल्यः तस्य ह मूर्धा विपपात अपि ह अस्य परिमोषिणः अस्थीनि अपजह्रुर् अन्यत् मन्यमानाः

Traducción

"On what are you and your self established?" — "On prāṇa." — "And prāṇa on what?" — "On apāna." — "And apāna on what?" — "On vyāna." — "And vyāna on what?" — "On udāna." — "And udāna on what?" — "On samāna." — This ātman is "not so, not so" (neti neti): ungraspable, for it is not grasped; indestructible, for it is not destroyed; unattached, for it does not cling; unbound, it does not waver and takes no harm. — "Here are eight dwellings, eight worlds, eight gods, eight persons. He who draws those persons out and back in and passes beyond them — about that upaniṣadic person I ask you! If you do not explain him to me, your head will fall off." Śākalya did not know him — and his head fell off. Even his bones were carried away by robbers, who took them for something else.
