"On what are you and your self established?" — "On prāṇa." — "And prāṇa on what?" — "On apāna." — "And apāna on what?" — "On vyāna." — "And vyāna on what?" — "On udāna." — "And udāna on what?" — "On samāna." — This ātman is "not so, not so" (neti neti): ungraspable, for it is not grasped; indestructible, for it is not destroyed; unattached, for it does not cling; unbound, it does not waver and takes no harm. — "Here are eight dwellings, eight worlds, eight gods, eight persons. He who draws those persons out and back in and passes beyond them — about that upaniṣadic person I ask you! If you do not explain him to me, your head will fall off." Śākalya did not know him — and his head fell off. Even his bones were carried away by robbers, who took them for something else.

The end of the interrogation comes in three beats. First Yājñavalkya calmly plays out Śākalya's regress: the heart and you rest on prāṇa, prāṇa on apāna… down to samāna: the chain of breaths circles into itself, as befits the ring of life. Then, above all the supports, he pronounces the great words: sa eṣa neti nety ātmā — "this ātman: not so, not so" — with four glories: agṛhyaḥ, ungraspable; aśīryaḥ, indestructible; asaṅgaḥ, unattached (asito na vyathate na riṣyati — unbound, unwavering, unharmed). The last Support does not rest "on something" — it is that which can be neither seized nor destroyed nor soiled: the answer Śākalya deserved to hear — and could not hold.
And then Yājñavalkya, for the first time that night, asks a question himself: "eight dwellings, eight worlds, eight gods, eight persons" (those very eight rounds of Śākalya's!) — "he who draws those persons out and back in and passes beyond them: about that upaniṣadic person (aupaniṣadaṁ puruṣam) I ask you. If you do not answer, your head will fall off." The condition of the tournament cuts both ways: he who asked about the eight is bound to know the Ninth — the Lord of the eight. Śākalya "did not know him" (na mene) — tasya ha mūrdhā vipapāta: "and his head fell off".
The Upaniṣad does not gloat over the death — it only adds a bitter full stop: his bones were carried off by robbers, "taking them for something else" — even the swaggerer's remains met the fate of unrecognition that he himself had been guilty of all night: taking one thing for another. Such is the law of the brahmodya, of which everyone was honestly warned: words about the Limit are not a sport; whoever plays with them without knowledge plays with his own head. Bhakti will say the same truth more gently: about the Infinite one disputes humbly — or perishes by one's own question.
