The vine reaches the summit names: Yājñavalkya from Uddālaka (the testimony of studentship familiar from the mantha, 6.3.7), Uddālaka from Aruṇa, and further back — Upaveśi, Kuśri, Vājaśravas (a name from Naciketas's line!)… All the heroes of the Upaniṣads turn out to be clusters on one vine.
Here the tradition holds its chief clamp: the greatest voices of the book are no solitary geniuses but links; Yājñavalkya himself, the thunder of the tournaments, is named as a pupil — and by that is doubly great. One last ascent of the vine remains — beyond the human.
