सा एषा गायत्री एतस्मिन् तुरीये दर्शते पदे परोरजसि प्रतिष्ठिता तद् वै तत् सत्ये प्रतिष्ठितम् चक्षुर् वै सत्यम् चक्षुर् हि वै सत्यम् तस्मात् यद् इदानीं द्वौ विवदमानौ एयातम् अहम् अदर्शम् अहम् अश्रौषम् इति यः एवम् ब्रूयात् अहम् अदर्शम् इति तस्मा एव श्रद्दध्याम तद् वै तत् सत्यम् बले प्रतिष्ठितम् प्राणः वै बलम् तत् प्राणे प्रतिष्ठितम् तस्मात् आहुः बलम् सत्यात् ओगीयः इति एवम् वै एषा गायत्री अध्यात्मं प्रतिष्ठिता सा ह एषा गयान् तत्रे प्राणाः वै गयाः तत् प्राणान् तत्रे तद् यत् गयान् तत्रे तस्मात् गायत्री नाम सः याम् एव अमूम् सावित्रीम् अन्वाह एषा एव सा सः यस्मा अन्वाह तस्य प्राणान् त्रायते
sā eṣā gāyatrī etasmin turīye darśate pade parorajasi pratiṣṭhitā tad vai tat satye pratiṣṭhitam cakṣur vai satyam cakṣur hi vai satyam tasmāt yad idānīṃ dvau vivadamānau eyātam aham adarśam aham aśrauṣam iti yaḥ evam brūyāt aham adarśam iti tasmā eva śraddadhyāma tad vai tat satyam bale pratiṣṭhitam prāṇaḥ vai balam tat prāṇe pratiṣṭhitam tasmāt āhuḥ balam satyāt ogīyaḥ iti evam vai eṣā gāyatrī adhyātmaṃ pratiṣṭhitā sā ha eṣā gayān tatre prāṇāḥ vai gayāḥ tat prāṇān tatre tad yat gayān tatre tasmāt gāyatrī nāma saḥ yām eva amūm sāvitrīm anvāha eṣā eva sā saḥ yasmā anvāha tasya prāṇān trāyate
This gāyatrī is established on that fourth, visible foot above the dust; and that is established on truth. Truth is the eye: the eye indeed is truth; therefore, if two now come disputing — "I saw it!", "I heard it!" — we believe the one who says "I saw it". And this truth is established on strength; strength is the breath: [truth] is established on the breath. Therefore they say: strength is mightier than truth. So is the gāyatrī established with reference to the body: she protected (tatre) the gayas — the vital powers; and therefore she is gāyatrī.

The chain of the prayer's supports: the gāyatrī rests on the Fourth-and-sun, the Fourth on truth, truth on the eye (the eyewitness against hearsay: "we believe the one who says 'I saw'" — the oldest rule of evidence!), and truth in its turn on strength-prāṇa: "strength is mightier than truth" — without vital strength even the truth cannot stand (the love of truth in a powerless man goes out).
And the crown is the etymology of the name: gāyatrī is "she who protected the gayas" (gayāṁs tatre): she guarded the breaths that sang her. The prayer is named for its work: the saviour of those who sing. Whoever sings her is already held by her, as she has held all who ever sang: the name gāyatrī is a receipt for eternal protection.
