Traducción
He who knows the eldest and the best becomes the eldest and the best among his own. The breath is the eldest and the best. He who knows this becomes the eldest and the best among his own — and among those among whom he wishes to be so.

The last book of the Upaniṣad opens with the familiar vidyā of the titles (we read it in Chāndogya 5.1): prāṇo vai jyeṣṭhaś ca śreṣṭhaś ca — the breath is older than all the powers (it works in the embryo before speech and eyes) and better than all (as it is about to prove). Age and worth, so rarely joined in people, are one in prāṇa.
The Bṛhadāraṇyaka adds its own rider to the promise: "and among those among whom he wishes" — the knower's primacy is portable: he is the eldest not in his own circle only. So the book's final cycle opens — about life, its contest, its sacrificial fire and its continuation in offspring: the khila ends the Upaniṣad with what every household lives by.
