A vidyā that turns the very notion of asceticism over: paramaṁ tapaḥ — "the highest austerity" — is not self-mortification by vow but illness, the carrying out of the body and the funeral pyre, accepted with knowledge! The heat of a fever is a tapas hotter than any voluntary one; the last journey into the forest and onto the fire are attainments greater than sacrifices.
Asceticism knows no more merciful teaching: the sick man is told that his fever is not a failure of austerity but the austerity itself; the dying man, that his death is his greatest offering. Nothing is taken away from fate — everything is turned into practice: knowing this, a man "conquers the highest world" by the very thing he feared most. Suffering accepted as tapas is an alchemy available in any condition: the last vidyā for those who have not been given the health for the others.
