सः होवाच गार्ग्यः यः एव असौ विद्युति पुरुषः एतम् एव अहम् ब्रह्म उपास इति सः होवाच अजातशत्रुः मा म एतस्मिन् संवदिष्ठाः तेजस्वी इति वै अहम् एतम् उपास इति सः यः एतम् एवम् उपास्ते तेजस्वी ह भवति तेजस्विनी ह अस्य प्रजा भवति
saḥ hovāca gārgyaḥ yaḥ eva asau vidyuti puruṣaḥ etam eva aham brahma upāsa iti saḥ hovāca ajātaśatruḥ mā ma etasmin saṃvadiṣṭhāḥ tejasvī iti vai aham etam upāsa iti saḥ yaḥ etam evam upāste tejasvī ha bhavati tejasvinī ha asya prajā bhavati
Gārgya said: "The person who is in lightning — him I venerate as Brahman." Ajātaśatru said: "Do not speak to me of him! I venerate him as the Radiant One." He who venerates him thus becomes radiant, and his offspring become radiant.

The third address is lightning, and its rank is tejasvin, "the Radiant One": an instantaneous, blinding flash. And the fruit is after the image: radiance in the venerator himself and in his offspring — the brilliance is handed down the line as fire runs along a dry branch.
Gārgya's series of addresses moves across the sky: sun, moon, lightning — three lights familiar from all the Upaniṣads as stages of the path and images of Brahman. But here they are taken in a new turn: not as steps of an ascent but as examination questions — and the one examined is the teacher. The Upaniṣad never tires of reminding us that holy words by themselves are not yet holy knowledge; the question is always who is saying them, and out of what.
