Hearing went out. Having stayed away for a year, it came back and asked: "How did you live without me?" They said: "Like the deaf: not hearing with hearing — but living by the other powers. So we lived." And it entered again.

The third year is without hearing: they live "like the deaf". Even the doorway of the Veda proved not to be a load-bearing wall of the house; life rests not on its doors but on its master.
The rhythm of the parable does not change: a year away — a question — the body's sober answer — a quiet return to its place. Every power measures its own absence in person and satisfies itself in person: without it there is a maiming, not a death. Humility is not taught from outside — it is worked out by going away.
