Then Uddālaka Āruṇi questioned him: "Yājñavalkya," he said, "we lived in the land of the Madras, in the house of Patañcala Kāpya, studying the sacrifice. He had a wife possessed by a gandharva; we asked it: 'Who are you?' It said: 'Kabandha Ātharvaṇa' — and asked Patañcala and the ritualists: 'Do you know, Kāpya, that thread by which this world and the other world and all beings are bound together?' Patañcala said: 'I do not know it, reverend one.' Then it asked: 'And do you know, Kāpya, that Inner Ruler who rules from within this world and the other world and all beings?' Patañcala said: 'I do not know him, reverend one.' And it said: 'He who knows that thread and that Inner Ruler knows Brahman, knows the worlds, knows the gods, knows the Vedas, knows beings, knows the ātman, knows everything.' So it told them; and I know it. And if you, Yājñavalkya, not knowing that thread and that Inner Ruler, have driven away the cows that belong only to knowers of Brahman — your head will fall off!" — "I know, Gautama, both that thread and that Inner Ruler." — "Anyone can say 'I know, I know'. Tell us as you know it!"

The seventh is Uddālaka Āruṇi himself, the father of Śvetaketu, the teacher of "tat tvam asi": the most formidable of the opponents. And his question has the same otherworldly pedigree as Bhujyu's (the same house of Patañcala, a second gandharva — Kabandha Ātharvaṇa): it is about the two greatest secrets — the sūtra, the thread on which both worlds and all beings are strung, and the antaryāmin, the Inner Ruler who governs everything from within.
He who knows them, by the gandharva's word, "knows everything": Brahman, the worlds, the gods, the Vedas, beings, the ātman. And Uddālaka raises the stake to the limit: if you drove away the cows without knowing, "your head will fall off". Yājñavalkya's answer is calm: "I know them both." — "Anyone can say 'I know'. Tell us as you know it!" Uddālaka's demand is impeccably teacherly: knowledge is tested not by a claim but by an exposition. Now the antaryāmin-brāhmaṇa will sound — the text on which the whole Vaiṣṇava Vedānta stands.
