…Brahminhood casts off the one who knows brahminhood as apart from the ātman. The kṣatra casts off the one who knows the kṣatra as apart from the ātman. The worlds cast off the one who knows the worlds as apart from the ātman. The gods cast off the one who knows the gods as apart from the ātman. Beings cast off the one who knows beings as apart from the ātman. Everything casts off the one who knows everything as apart from the ātman. This brahminhood, this kṣatra, these worlds, these gods, these beings, this all — is this ātman.

The reverse side of the teaching about the dear is a stern warning: parādāt, "casts off". He who knows priesthood, power, the worlds, the gods "apart from the ātman" (anyatra ātmanaḥ) — as alien, separate, self-existent things — is cast off by them: what is taken as another's does not stay in the hands. All knowledge that goes past the Self is knowledge of phantoms, and phantoms take their revenge: they slip away, they betray, they collapse.
And the positive conclusion is as vast as the sky: "this all is this ātman" (idaṁ sarvaṁ yad ayam ātmā). Not "everything is a phantom" but "everything is His": gods, worlds, estates are living facets of one Self. He who knows thus is cast off by nothing — he is at home in everything. For bhakti this is the alphabet: the universe taken without the Lord is stolen goods and therefore punishes; the same universe taken as His is a native house where everything serves and everything answers with love.
