Of this mind the body is the sky, and its luminous form is yonder sun: as far as the mind extends, so far extends the sky, so far yonder sun. These two came together as a pair — and the breath was born. It is Indra, and it is without a rival: a rival is a second; he who knows thus has no rival.

The mind has the sky for its body and the sun for its light: thought is as wide as the firmament and as clear as noon. And here is the summit of the series: speech-earth and mind-sky "came together as a pair" — and the breath was born. The triad turns out to be a family here too, now on a cosmic scale: prāṇa is the child of heaven and earth, of word and thought, their living fruit.
To the newborn is given the name of Indra, the king, and the title asapatna, "without a rival", with its own solution: "a rival is a second" (dvitīyo vai sapatnaḥ). Breath-Indra has no second — we saw it in the contest for the udgītha: the selfless have no competitors, for they share the spoil with no one. And the promise to the knower is the same: "he has no rival" — not because he has beaten everyone, but because he has stepped out of the game in which there are seconds.
