The final vaṁśa of the whole Upaniṣad — and it is astonishing: dozens of generations of teachers are named after their mothers! Pautimāṣī-putra, "the son of Pautimāṣī", Kātyāyanī-putra, Gautamī-putra: the longest chain of maternal names in the Veda. The book that has just taught us to honour a nursing woman as Sarasvatī signs its tradition with the names of its teachers' mothers.
After the code about birth such a list is no formality but a seal: the knowledge was handed on by men, but it was these women who carried and nursed them; the vine of the teaching is grafted onto maternal names. A fitting finale for a book in which women — Maitreyī and Gārgī — stood at the very summits.
