ता वा अस्यैता हिता नाम नाड्यः यथा केशः सहस्रधा भिन्नस् तावता अणिम्ना तिष्ठन्ति शुक्लस्य नीलस्य पिङ्गलस्य हरितस्य लोहितस्य पूर्णाः अथ यत्र एनम् घ्नन्तीव जिनन्तीव हस्तीव विच्छाययति गर्तम् इव पतति यद् एव जाग्रत् भयं पश्यति तद् अत्र अविद्यया मन्यते अथ यत्र देवः इव राजा इव अहम् एव इदम् सर्वो अस्मि इति मन्यते सः अस्य परमः लोकः
tā vā asyaitā hitā nāma nāḍyaḥ yathā keśaḥ sahasradhā bhinnas tāvatā aṇimnā tiṣṭhanti śuklasya nīlasya piṅgalasya haritasya lohitasya pūrṇāḥ atha yatra enam ghnantīva jinantīva hastīva vicchāyayati gartam iva patati yad eva jāgrat bhayaṃ paśyati tad atra avidyayā manyate atha yatra devaḥ iva rājā iva aham eva idam sarvo asmi iti manyate saḥ asya paramaḥ lokaḥ
These are his channels called hitā, fine as a hair split a thousandfold, filled with white, blue, tawny, green and red. And when it seems to him that he is being killed, that he is being overpowered, that an elephant is chasing him, that he is falling into a pit — the fear he has seen while awake he creates there out of ignorance. But when it seems to him that he is as it were a god, as it were a king, "I am all this" — that is his highest world.

A return to the hitā channels (2.1.19; 4.2.3) — now as the beds of dreams: finest of all, a thousandth of a hair, filled with a five-coloured subtle fluid. Along them the dreams run, and the Upaniṣad divides them without illusions: nightmares — "being killed, an elephant chasing, falling into a pit" — are the fears of waking reproduced avidyayā, out of ignorance; while dreams of greatness — "I am a god, I am a king, I am all this" — are asya paramo lokaḥ, "his highest world", a glimpse of his true nature.
The criterion is striking: fear is always an import and always a lie about oneself; greatness and all-embracingness are a memory of the truth. The dreaming psyche is read as a battlefield of ignorance against self-recognition: night after night the "elephant in pursuit" and the "I am all this" argue within us. The Upaniṣad bids us know which of the two dreams is about what is true.
