Now, with reference to the deities. "I shall blaze," undertook Fire; "I shall burn," the Sun; "I shall shine," the Moon; and so the other deities, each by its own divine work. As the middle breath is among the breaths, so is Vāyu, the wind, among these deities: the other deities set, but Vāyu does not set. Vāyu is the deity that knows no setting.

The same law in heaven: fire goes out, sun and moon go down, every light knows its setting; Vāyu the wind alone "does not set" (anastamitā devatā): it blows by day and by night, in winter and in summer, knowing no astam, no going down. The wind is the heavenly prāṇa, the eternal labourer of the atmosphere, the same unwearying middle one among the luminaries.
The pair "prāṇa in the body — Vāyu in the world" is familiar from the Chāndogya's saṁvarga-vidyā (4.3): the two great Absorbers. Here they share one crown: not setting. A lesson for the eye: greatness lies not in brightness but in continuity; the shining ones come and go — the blowing one abides. And a lesson for the heart: take your measure not from flashes but from the wind — from that in oneself and in the world which serves without a sunset.
