He among men who is fortunate, rich, lord over others, most fully provided with all human enjoyments — that is the highest bliss of men. A hundred human blisses make one bliss of the fathers who have won their world; a hundred blisses of the fathers make one bliss of the world of the gandharvas; a hundred gandharva blisses make one bliss of the gods-by-work; a hundred of those make one bliss of the gods-by-birth; a hundred of those make one bliss of the world of Prajāpati; a hundred of those make one bliss of the world of Brahman. [And all of it belongs also] to the man learned in the Veda, free of guile and unstruck by desire… This is the highest bliss. This is the world of Brahman, your majesty." So spoke Yājñavalkya.

The famous scale of blisses (the same is in Taittirīya 2.8): the unit is all human happiness at once — the lucky rich lord at the summit of enjoyments; then degrees by hundreds: the fathers, the gandharvas, the gods of merit, the gods by birth, Prajāpati, Brahman — ten to the fourteenth power of human blisses! The arithmetic is not for counting but for crushing the imagination: the distance to Joy cannot be walked by accumulation.
And the whole scale is blown up by the refrain (in the full text it is repeated at every step): as much belongs to "the knower, free of desire" (akāmahatasya — "unstruck by desire"). The whole ladder of heavens is reached not by climbing but by knowing: śrotriyasya cākāmahatasya — a man learned in the Veda and not eaten up by desire stands on the topmost rung without leaving the earth. Desire is not the engine of joy but its tax: the less "struck by desire" one is, the fuller one's share in the one Bliss by which (4.3.32) everything lives.
