The form of this person is like a saffron-dyed garment, like white sheep's wool, like the indragopa insect, like a tongue of flame, like a white lotus, like a sudden flash of lightning. For him who knows thus, glory is like a sudden flash of lightning. And now the instruction: "not so! not so!" (neti neti) — for there is nothing higher than this "not so". And his name is "the Truth of truth": the breaths are truth, and he is their truth.

First comes the one portrait of the Puruṣa in this book, woven out of pure flashes of colour: saffron, white wool, scarlet cochineal, flame, white lotus, lightning. Six likenesses of light and tenderness — not a description but a sheaf of glimmers: so is He seen who cannot be examined, by illuminations. And the knower's glory is "like a sudden flash of lightning" (sakṛd-vidyutta): truth comes as a flash, all at once.
And at once the great ādeśa, the most famous word of the Bṛhadāraṇyaka: neti neti — "not so, not so". After all the images, the cancelling of all images: no "so" clings to Him finally; every definition is a door to be passed through, not to be settled in. The Upaniṣad sets neti neti not against images (it has just given six!) but after them: first show the heart saffron and lightning — then say "not only this, not exactly this". What is denied is not the Face but the ceiling; neti neti is the sentry of the Face's infinity.
That is why the final name is not negative but superlative: satyasya satyam, "the Truth of truth" (as at 2.1.20). The world of the breaths is true; He is the truth of that truth. Gauḍīya Vedānta reads neti neti in just this way: not "there is no God at all" but "none of your 'so's has exhausted Him" — apophasis as the fence around an unutterable fullness that has a taste, the colour of a flash, and the glory of lightning.
