Gārgya said: "The person who is in the quarters of the sky — him I venerate as Brahman." Ajātaśatru said: "Do not speak to me of him! I venerate him as the Second who never departs." He who venerates him thus gains a second, and his company is not cut off from him.

The tenth address is the quarters of the sky, and their rank is unexpectedly warm: dvitīyo 'napagaḥ — "the Second who does not go away": the directions are always with you, wherever you stand they are at hand, a companion that never leaves. The fruit is fellowship: "he gains a second", and his company (gaṇa) does not fall away from him — faithful companions, an undwindling retinue.
The turn is a beautiful one: in a book where "fear comes from a second" (1.4.2), a holy second is also found — an unfailing accompaniment. Not every duality is a threat; there is the second-as-companion, whose image the quarters of the sky hold before every traveller. Bhakti recognises here the shadow of its own treasure: the Friend who does not depart is the oldest of the names of the Lord beside the soul (the two birds on one tree — RV 1.164.20).
