He who desires "may I attain greatness" should, during the sun's northward course, in the bright fortnight, on an auspicious day, having kept the upasad vow for twelve days, having gathered in a cup of udumbara wood all the herbs and fruits, having swept and smeared [the place], laid the fire and strewn [the grass], having consecrated the clarified butter in due order, prepare the mantha under a male constellation and offer it:

After the great paths comes a practice for the living: the mantha, the churned draught of greatness (a companion vidyā to ChU 5.2). Its preparation is a whole liturgy of times and substances: the northern half-year, the waxing moon, an auspicious day, a twelve-day vow, a cup of udumbara wood (the sacred fig of abundance), "all the herbs and fruits", a male constellation.
Everything is calibrated for increase: the season of growth, the tree of plenty, the world's whole herbarium in one cup. The Upaniṣad, which has just shown the vanity of lunar merits, calmly teaches a rite of greatness: earthly ends are lawful on their own storey — only let no one mistake the storey for the roof.
