ऋचः यजूषि सामानि इति अष्टौ अक्षराणि अष्टाक्षरम् ह वा एकम् गायत्र्यै पदम् एतद् उ हैवास्या एतत् सः यावती इयम् त्रयी विद्या तावद् ह जयति यः अस्या एतद् एवम् पदम् वेद

"Ṛcs, yajuses, sāmans" — eight syllables; and one foot of the gāyatrī has eight syllables: this is that foot of hers. He who knows this foot of hers conquers as much as there is in the threefold knowledge.

The second foot is the three Vedas: ṛco yajūṁṣi sāmāni — eight syllables again! The whole threefold vidyā is packed into the metre's second line: after the worlds, the knowledge of the worlds.
The ladder of the feet ascends: space (the worlds) — word (the Vedas) — and, ahead, life. The gāyatrī gathers up the universe three times, in three handfuls of eight; and each handful is already a whole domain for the knower.
