The king invited him to stay; the young man, slighting the invitation, ran away. He came to his father and said: "And yet you told me before that I had been taught!" — "How so, my clever one?" — "Five questions a man of royal blood asked me — and not one of them do I know." — "Which?" — "These," and he repeated the openings.

The liveliest of scenes: the shamed youth "slighted the hospitality and ran away" (pradudrāva!) — pride would not spend the night under the victor's roof. And then a domestic squabble: "you said I had been taught!" — the son blames his father, as every beaten pupil blames his school.
The father's "how so, my clever one?" (sumedhāḥ — with affectionate irony) is followed by a businesslike inquiry: which questions? repeat the openings. Uddālaka neither excuses himself nor consoles — he goes straight to work: where exactly did our knowledge end? The dignity of a real teacher is in this instant turn from offence to business.
