भूमिः अन्तरिक्षम् द्यौः इति अष्टौ अक्षराणि अष्टाक्षरम् ह वा एकम् गायत्र्यै पदम् एतद् उ हैवास्या एतत् सः यावद् एषु त्रिषु लोकेषु तावद् ह जयति यः अस्या एतद् एवम् पदम् वेद

"Earth, mid-region, sky" — eight syllables; and one foot of the gāyatrī has eight syllables: this is that foot of hers. He who knows this foot of hers conquers as much as there is in the three worlds.

The vidyā of the gāyatrī begins — the holiest of metres (24 syllables in three feet of eight), the mother of Vedic prayer. The first foot is identified with the three worlds: bhūmir antarikṣaṁ dyauḥ — exactly eight syllables! — earth, mid-region and sky laid into one line of the metre.
Metrics here is metaphysics: the gāyatrī does not "describe" the worlds — it holds them in its syllables; one who recites the foot holds the three worlds in his mouth. And the fruit is proportionate: the knower conquers "as much as there is in the three worlds" — prayer turns out to be possession.
