By a golden disc the face of Truth is covered. Do thou, Pūṣan, uncover it — for me, devoted to truth as my law, that I may see. O Pūṣan, sole seer, Yama, Sūrya, son of Prajāpati! Spread apart your rays, gather in your brightness — that I may see that most beautiful form of yours. That Puruṣa — I am he. [Now] the breath goes into the immortal wind, and this body into ashes. Oṁ! Will, remember: remember what has been done! Will, remember: remember what has been done! O Agni, lead us by a good path to prosperity, O god who knows all the ways; turn away from us the wandering sin — and we shall offer you the greatest praise.

The fifth book ends with a dying man's prayer — the very verses that became the finale of the Īśopaniṣad (Īśā 15–18): evidence that this prayer is the common treasure of the whole Śukla-Yajurvedic tradition. Hiraṇmayena pātreṇa satyasyāpihitaṁ mukham — "by a golden disc the face of Truth is covered": the sun's very glory is a veil; and the plea is at once daring and humble: tat tvaṁ pūṣann apāvṛṇu — "do Thou uncover it": not "I shall tear off the veil" but "Thou draw it aside"; the Face can be seen only by the mercy of the One who wears the covering. And the goal is named with full Vaiṣṇava precision: "that I may see that most beautiful form of yours" (rūpaṁ kalyāṇatamam) — not a faceless radiance: a form, and the most beautiful!
"That Puruṣa — I am he" (so 'ham asmi) — words of kinship on the threshold: the departing man confesses his sameness of nature with the One who looks out of the sun — the spark calls the Fire by its father's name. Then the estate is divided among the elements: the breath to the immortal wind, the body to ashes; and a threefold knocking at one's own depth: oṁ krato smara kṛtaṁ smara — "Will, remember! remember what has been done!": in the last hour a man is his memory; whatever the will remembers, that way lies the road (kṛta here is "what has been done" and — to a bhakti ear — the Name that must be remembered).
And the last verse is to Agni, who knows all roads: "lead us by a good path… turn away the wandering sin": not "I shall get there" but "lead"; the closing word of the fifth book is a petition for a Guide and a promise of praise (nama-uktiṁ vidhema). So a knower dies according to the Bṛhadāraṇyaka: with a confession of kinship, with memory in the will, and with his hand in the hand of the Guide.
