चक्षुर् वै ग्रहः सः रूपेणातिग्रहेण गृहीतः चक्षुषा हि रूपाणि पश्यति

The eye is a grasper; it is grasped by form as the over-grasper: for by the eye one sees forms.

The fourth pair: eye and form. The one who looks supposes that he takes the world with his gaze — but the gaze is chained to the visible: wherever a form beckons, the eye is drawn; beauty leads the looker on an invisible leash.
That is why all the schools of inner life begin at the gates of the eyes: not because the visible is bad, but because the leash is shortest just here. And the summit of the same science is to give the eyes the best of forms: the dark-hued Lord, whose image, as the devotees say, "captivates the captivator" — takes captive the very power of sight, and by that captivity sets it free.
