कतमः आत्मा इति यः अयं विज्ञानमयः प्राणेषु हृद्य् अन्तर्ज्योतिः पुरुषः सः समानः सन् उभौ लोकौ अनुसंचरति ध्यायतीव लेलायतीव सः हि स्वप्नो भूत्वा इमम् लोकम् अतिक्रामति मृत्यो रूपाणि

अनुवाद
"Which is this ātman?" — "The person made of consciousness among the breaths, the light within the heart. Remaining the same, he passes through both worlds — he as it were thinks, he as it were flutters; becoming a dream, he steps beyond this world — the forms of death."

"Which ātman?" — and Yājñavalkya gives the formula-address: vijñānamayaḥ prāṇeṣu hṛdy antarjyotiḥ puruṣaḥ — "the person made of consciousness, among the breaths, the light within the heart". Not an organ and not a function: the Shining One, living among the vital powers as a king among his retinue.
And at once his chief property: samānaḥ san — "remaining the same", he passes through both worlds: this one and that, waking and dream, life and death. Then the marvellous verbs: dhyāyatīva lelāyatīva — "he as it were thinks, he as it were flutters": the iva, "as it were", guards his freedom — he is bound neither to the thinking nor to the flutter, he plays with them. And "becoming a dream, he steps beyond the forms of death": in dream he rehearses that very stepping-beyond which he will perform at the end. The theme is set: the conversation will now follow him through his three stations — waking, dream, deep repose — right up to the departure.
